ICU RENOVATION
We were tasked by the engineering authority at the Ministry of National Guard – Health Affairs to renovate the intermediate Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The project was a great success, and the Saudi National Guard Minister HRH Prince Mutaib II bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud had expressed his admiration for the design and level of work.
Before even I was an engineer, I always believed that hospitals should not make patients (especially in ICUs) feel that they are in a hospital. I also believe that the psychological factor is as crucial as other factors for patients’ quick recovery. Therefore when I got awarded this project, I felt it’s a gold chance to bring my vision to reality and I decided to work accordingly.
My main objective was to provide a positive ambient all over the place that would help patients to recover as quickly as possible. To do so, I had to take a very hard decision giving a priority for quality of service over quantity.
El Patio
I redesigned the patients rooms space to create an adjacent rectangular-shaped area and dedicated it to a patio, which can be viewed and accessed from all rooms. I opened a skylight in the patio’s ceiling to allow natural sunlight to flow downwards. The natural lighting altogether with the greenery and plantation (and the blue color indoors) provided a breathtaking serene view that, according to testimonials of the unit’s doctors and nurses, provided a sense of tranquility which proved to help expediting the recovery in many cases.
